Tairneanaich a’ beicearachd

Tairneanaich a' beicearachd

Tha dùil aig am buidheann òigridh Tàirneanaich a th’air an ruith le Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais, an dùil an dealbh chluich aca ‘Suirghe ann an Siabost’ a thoirt chun Mhòd Nàiseanta ann am Pàislig san Dàmhair am bliadhna. Tha a’ chlann fhèin air a thighinn an àirde le dòighean gus airgead a chruinneachadh airson an turais agus ag obair còmhla ri Marina Mhoireach gus na pròiseactan beaga sin a choileanadh.

Bho chionn ghoirid, chaidh tachartas bèicearachd a chur air dòigh as dèidh na sgoile, dh’ullaich a’ chlann rockbuns, krispy cakes, malteser cakes agus cupcakes. Fhuair iad stiùireadh agus cuideachadh bho Karina Mhoireach, tè a tha gu math ainmeil airson na sgilean bèicearachd aice. Reic a’ chlann am bèicearachd an ath latha anns an sgoile gus airgead a thogail.

Bha seo gu lèir air a dhèanamh tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig gus cothrom a thoirt don chloinn an cuid Gàidhlig a leasachadh ’s a leadachadh anns a’ choimhearsnachd.

Cùm sùil a-mach airson gnìomhan Tàirneanaich sna mìosan ri thighinn, is iad gu bhith gu math trang!

Shawbost Bake Sale

Gaelic youth group Tàirneanaich, rùn by Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais, hope to travel to the National Mod in Paisley this year to perform their play ‘Suirgh ann an Siabost’. The children  have come up with various fundraising ideas themselves to raise money for the trip and are working with Marina Murray to accomplish these activities.

Recently an event was organised by the Iomairt where the group were given guidance by well known cake designer Karina Murray, on how to bake cup cakes, rock buns, malteser cakes and krispie cakes.  The children successfully sold the baking the following day during break times in school to raise funds.

This was all delivered through the medium of Gaelic which helps to develop language skills and gives the children the confidence to use Gaelic in an informal community setting.

Keep an eye out for more of Tàirneanaich’s activities over thè coming months, they’re going to be busy!

Plana Gàidhlig Shiaboist

Clann ShiaboistPlana Gàidhlig Shiaboist

A’ leantainn rannsachadh mu staid na Gàidhlig ann an Siabost bho chionn 2-3 bliadhna air ais, chaidh plana gnìomh (Plana Gàidhlig Shiaboist) a chuir ri chèile agus fhoillseachadh bho chionn bliadhna gus feuchainn ris a’ Ghàidhlig a neartachadh anns an sgìre.

Chaidh seo a dhèanamh leis a’ choimhearsnachd còmhla ri Iomairt Iar Thuath Leòdhais le taic o Bhòrd na Gàidhlig.

Bhon uairsin tha iomadh tachartas air àite a ghabhail agus buidhnean coimhearsnachd às ùr air an stèidheachadh, mar eisimpleir Tàirneanaich is Sradagan.

Tha fiosrachadh mu na tachartasan air am foillseachadh air làrach-lìn Plana Gàidhlig Shiaboist www.siabost.co.uk.

Thathas air prìomhachas a thoirt do obair òigridh agus tha mòran thachartasan air a bhith ann rè na bliadhna a’ toirt cothroman dhan òigridh an cuid Gàidhlig a cleachdadh agus a gleusadh agus sgilean ùr ionnsachadh ann an suidheachaidhean neo fhoirmeil, fiosrachail taobh a-muigh na sgoile.

Thuirt Ceannard Sgoil Shiaboist, Iain G Dòmhnallach,

Tha na tidsearan air mothachadh gu bheil sgilean labhairt na cloinne air a thighinn air adhart gu mòr tro bhith a’ gabhail pàirt anns na pròiseactan seo. Tha sinne den bheachd, ma tha sgilean labhairt gan àrdachadh, gu bheil a h-uile sgil cànain eile a’ tighinn air adhart cuideachd.

Tha a’ chlann air innse dhomh gu bheil an obair a tha air a bhith a’ dol thairis air an dà bhliadhna mu dheireadh air misneachd a thoirt dhaibh airson a bhith a’ cleachdadh na Gàidhlig ann an diofar shuidhichidhean, san sgoil agus air taobh a-muigh na sgoile.

Tha sinn an dòchas gu lean an obair ionmholta seo anns an sgìre againn anns na bliadhnachan a tha romhainn, agus gu faigh sibh an cothrom na freumhaichean torrach seo a chur sìos ann an sgìrean eile cuideachd.

Chaidh cuideachd cothroman ionnsachaidh is cleachdaidh ùr a chur air dòigh do inbhich, mar eisimpleir, bùthan-obrach air diofar chuspairean inntinneach leithid còcaireachd agus bòidhchead agus fiù’s seirbheiseachadh charbadan!

Tha gach cuid fileantaich is luchd-ionnsachaidh air a bhith a’ frithealadh na bùthan-obrach sa agus tha na cothroman sa dol a leantainn air adhart leis cho soirbheachail ’s a bha iad.

Ann a bhith a’ cur a’ phlana gnìomh an cèill, thathas air taic fhaighinn bho na buidhnean choimhearsnachd, Sgoil Shiaboist agus bho mhuinntir Shiaboist air fad.

Tha an iomairt a’ toirt cothrom do chlann agus inbhich bhon sgìre tighinn còmhla, rud a tha na dheagh bhuannachd dhan òigridh a thaobh a bhith a’ leasachadh cànain.

Thuirt Ceannard Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Iain Aonghas MacAoidh,

Tha e a’ toirt misneachd dhuinn an soirbheachas a thathar air fhaicinn tro ghnìomhan Phana Gàidhlig Shiaboist is ‘s e ceum glè chudromach a’ th’ ann an leasachadh na Gàidhlig.

’S e deagh eisimpleir a th’ ann an Siabost air co-obrachadh le muinntir na sgìre a’ tighinn còmhla gus an cànan aca a ghleidheadh.

Tha coimhearsnachdan far a bheil a’ Ghàidhlig air a cleachdadh deatamach don Ghàidhlig ann an Alba anns an àm a tha ri teachd agus ’s e luchd-labhairt na Gàidhlig an stòras as prìseile a th’ ann airson an cànan a chumail beò.

Dh’ iarramaid air coimhearsnachdan eile eisimpleir Shiaboist a leantainn gus Gàidhlig a neartachadh air feadh na dùthcha.

Gus a’ choimhearsnachd a chumail an àirde ri na tha air a bhith a’ tachairt sna mìosan a chaidh seachad, agus na tha ri thighinn sna mìosan air toiseach oirnn, bithear a’ sgaoileadh an darna Cuairt-Litir coimhearsnachd a dh’aithghearr.

A thuilleadh air a’ Chuairt-Litir, feuch gun tadhal sibh air an làrach-lìn, www.siabost.co.uk airson na naidheachdan as ùire agus fios mu thachartasan agus iomairtean a tha a’ dol air adhart.

Shawbost Gaelic Plan

Following research carried out on the state of Gaelic in Shawbost, an action plan “The Shawbost Gaelic Plan” was produced and published in 2012.

The plan, which was developed by the community and Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais with support from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, aims to strengthen Gaelic in the community.

Since its introduction, many events have taken place and a range of new groups have been established.

Information about youth groups such as Tàirneanaich and Sradagan is available on the Plana Gàidhlig Shiaboist website –  www.siabost.co.uk

Priority has been given to youth work with many events taking place this year which have enabled young people to use and develop their Gaelic and learn new skills in informative, informal settings outwith the school setting.

Headmaster of Shawbost Community School, Ian G MacDonald said:

The teachers have noticed that the children’s communication skills have improved significantly as a result of taking part in these projects.

We believe every aspect of a child’s language skills are improved when communication skills are developed.

The children have told me that the work that has been going on for the last two years has given them the confidence to speak Gaelic in different situations, in school and in the community.

We hope that this admirable work will continue in the years to come in our community and that there will be opportunity to extend this successful framework to other areas.

New learning and development opportunities have also been offered to adults, such as workshops on interesting and diverse topics ranging from cookery skills, beauty and skin care to car maintenance.

Both learners and fluent speakers took advantage of these opportunities and they have been so successful that they will continue to be offered.

The action plan initiatives have been strongly supported by  community groups, Shawbost School and members of the wider community, and the project has brought young and old together which has been invaluable for the children in their language development.

Bòrd na Gàidhlig Ceannard (CEO), John Angus Mackay said:

The success of Plana Gàidhlig Shiaboist is very encouraging, it is an important stage in the advancement of Gaelic development.

Shawbost are a great example of the community working together to safeguard their language.

Communities where Gaelic is spoken are crucial to the future of Gaelic in Scotland.

Gaelic speakers are the most valuable resource we have in keeping the language alive. We ask other communities throughout the country to follow Shawbost’s example in strengthening Gaelic.

Our second newsletter will be distributed shortly, it will include information about some of the events that have taken place over the past months and news of forthcoming initiatives. As well as the newsletter all the latest news about events and initiatives can be found on the website, www.siabost.co.uk

Easter Fun for Tàirneanaich!

Gaelic youth group ‘Tàirneanaich’ were given the opportunity to meet over the Easter break and take part in fun activities. Iomairt Gàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais organised a treasure hunt in Shawbost. This proved to be both informative and enabled the children to use and develop their Gaelic in an informal setting whilst learning new skills and having lots of fun. Tàirneanaich are an established community youth group who meet after school and at weekends in Shawbost.

Tàirneanaich met with Marina Murray (Initiative Officer) early in the day in order to prepare for the treasure hunt.  They organised themselves into two groups, studied maps and then set off to find the questions that had been left at different locations throughout the village.  The sun was shining as the children worked together, finding the questions and then jotting down the answers. Some of thè questions led thè groups to visit several houses in the community seeking answers.  Anna provided them with a pancake recipe and Calum told them the name of his oldest dog!

A workshop was held after lunch with Alison from Tiger Textiles. After some instruction and sewing tuition from Alison, the young people made  ‘juggling chickens’!

These type of events are very important as they provide an opportunity for young people to use Gaelic outwith the school setting, in their own community with members of the older generation.

Cookery Demonstration

On Saturday 16th March Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais held the second ‘cothroman cleachdaidh’ cookery workshops in Shawbost.  With Alasdair Macleod (Point), making his way over the moor again to put his cookery skills into action and whip up a fish themed menu.

Starting off with an appetiser of mackerel pate on mini oatcakes, followed by a very tasty bowl of cullen skink, a new recipe was learned for many attending.  For the main course, Alasdair demonstrated a spicy coating for monkfish which was new to everyone and very easy to replicate at home.  Everybody loves a pudding! – and this was satisfied with an easy to make Eton mess recipe!

The morning was highly successful from the cookery side of things, also most importantly, with the Gaelic element as both learners and fluent speakers of all ages using and developing their fluency of Gaelic in a friendly, informal environment.

This is the second cookery demonstration delivered in the community since the launch of the Shawbost Gaelic language plan.

We will continue to work together to provide more opportunities like this which will be of interest to members of the community and will promote Gaelic in the area – remember to keep an eye on the Shawbost website www.siabost.co.uk for all the events in the area.

Leasachadh Gàidhlig anns a’ choimhearsnachd

Leasachahd Gàidhlig - Film GThòisich Marc Mac a’ Ghobhainn a bhuineas do bhaile Shiaboist (16) air Duais Diùc Dhùn Èidinn ‘s t-samhradh a chaidh, agus ghabh e cothrom air an taic a tha an Iomairt a’ toirt do buidheann fosgailte An Taobh Siar ann a bhith a’ cruthachadh chothroman air a’ Ghàidhlig a chleachdadh mar phàirt den iomairt aige fhèin an Duais a ghlèidheadh.

Le taic bho Stephan MacLeòid, a bha ag obair aig Ionad Ioma Mheadhan Roinn Foghlaim is Seirbheisean Chloinne na Comhairle air Sgeama Greis Gnìomhachais Chomunn na Gàidhlig,  rinn Marc film goirid mun iomairt Ghàidhlig a tha a’ gabhail àite ann an Iar Thuath Leòdhais agus gu sònraichte an t-suidheachadh ann an Siabost.

‘S ann aig toiseach na bliadhna a thàinig Marc gu Marina Mhoireach, Oifigear na h-Iomairt, le beachd gun robh e airson am film a chur a-steach gu farpais FilmG.  Mar a mhìnich Marina:

“Rinn Marc obair mhath dha rìreabh air am film agus nuair a chunnaic sinn gur e ‘Miann’ aon de na cuspairean ann am farpais na bliadhna sa, smaoinich sinn gum biodh e gu math iomchaidh am film a chur a-steach dhan fharpais.  Agus abair gun do rinn sinn gàirdeachas nuair a chuala sinn gu robh Marc air a’ gheàrr-liosta a ruighinn – agus ann am farpais nan inbheach!”

Thuirt Marc:

“Bu mhath leam taing a thoirt do dh’ Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais agus Comhairle nan Eilean Siar airson an taic a thug iad dhomh agus airson an uidheamachd clàraidh a thoirt dhomh air iasad.  Cuideachd, bu mhath leam taing a thoirt do Choinneach Stiùbhart aig Moja Earranta a chuidich leis an obair-gearraidh.  Tha mi gu mòr a’ coimhead air adhart ris an turas a Ghlaschu agus ris a’ chuirm fhèin”.

Developing Gaelic in the community

Mark Smith (16), from Shawbost, embarked on the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme in the summer of 2012 and he grasped the opportunity to develop his Gaelic as part of the skills required to gain the award through spending time with the Shawbost Open Group which are supported by the Initiative.

With additional assistance from Stephen MacLeod, who was working as part of Comunn na Gàidhlig’s Summer Placement scheme within the Multimedia Unit of the Comhairle’s Education and Children’s Services Department, Mark produced a short film about the Gaelic development work which is taking place in the area, and in particular in Shawbost.

It was only at the turn of the year that Mark approached the Initiative’s Officer, Marina Murray, to express his interest in entering FilmG as well as using the resource on this website.  As Marina explained:

“Mark did a great job of the film and when we saw that ‘Desire’ was one of the topics featured in this year’s competition we thought it fitted in nicely to what Mark had produced.

And we were absolutely over the moon when we found out Mark had been shortlisted – in the adult’s competition!”

Mark said:

I would like to thank the West Side of Lewis Gaelic Initiative and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar for the support given to me and for the loan of the recording equipment.

I would also like to thank Kenny Stewart at Moja Limited who undertook the editing of the film.  I am really looking forward to going to Glasgow and especially to the awards ceremony.
