Tha am buidhean òigridh, Tàirneanaich air a bhith trang ‘s iad a’ cruinneachadh airgead airson an turais aca chun Mhòd Nàiseanta am Pàislig san Dàmhair. Chaidh ceilidh a chur air dòigh ann an Ionad na Seann Sgoil, Siabost, far an d’ fhuair na bha an làthair ceòl air leth bho Tàirneanaich agus The 4 Macs agus biadh blasta air a dheasachadh le Kathleen Mhoireach

A bharrachd air airgead a’ cruinneachadh thug an oidhche cothrom don òigridh an cuid Gàidhlig a chleachdadh ’s a leasachadh le co-aoisean agus inbhich ann an suidheachadh neo-fhoirmeil, cairdeal.

Tha iad fhèin, na pàrantan agus oifigeir na h-iomairt air oidhirp mhòr air a dhèanamh gus an turais seo a chur air dòigh agus tha iad taingeil airson an taic a tha iad a’ faighinn sa choimhearsnachd. Thèid an dealbh chluich ‘Suirghe ann an Siabost’ a thaisbeanadh air an àrd-ùrlar aig a’ Mhòd Nàiseanta.

Family Buffet/Ceilidh

Tàirneanaich have been very busy recently with several fundraising events. A family buffet/ceilidh was recently held at Ionad na Seann Sgoil, Shawbost in order to raise funds for their forthcoming trip to the National Mod in Paisley. Music was provided by Tàirneanaich and The 4 Macs, the excellent buffet was prepared by Kathleen Murray

As well as raising funds the ceilidh was an opportunity for the young people to develop their language skills in an informal setting. They happily conversed in Gaelic with their peers and with adults during an enjoyable evening of entertainment.

Tàirneanaich, their parents and the Initiative’s Officer (Marina Murray) have put a lot of time and effort into organising this trip and are grateful to all those who have supported them. Their play, ‘Suirghe ann an Siabost’ will be performed at the National Mod.

Tha buidheann Tormod an t-Seòladair a-nis air cuir air adhairt pròiseact comhla ri Sgoil Shiaboist agus a’ choimhearsnach.

Anns a’ Mhàigh bha ceithir latha aig Sgoil Shiaboist, clas 6 agus 7, còmhla ri Murchadh MacLeòid. Cheud latha bha iad a’coimhead ri na dealbhan a thog Tormod. Chaidh na dealbhan a-lorg na ‘negatives’ air gloinne ann a Siabost. Anns an t-Òg Mhios bha feasgair aig a’ choimhearsnach a’cur ainmeanan air na daoine anns na dealbhan, agus an uairsin anns an t-Iuchair, bha bùitean-obraich a’deanamh dealbhan air gloinne còmhla ri David Gillanders anns an dòigh a chleachdadh Tormod, agus cuideachd latha le eòlaichean a’bruidhinn mu dheidhinn Thormoid, na dealbhan agus nithean anns na leabhraichean aige agus na bheatha.

Tha na dealbhan prìseil aige a-nis ri faicinn anns an Seann Sgoil.

Tha pròiseact airson òigridh a’tachairt anns an t-Samhainn, a-rithist a’ dol a-mach dhan a’choimhearsnach, agus thèid Dvd a dheanamh aig an aon àm. Bìdh an Dvd mar chuimhneachan dhan a’choimhearsnach air Tormod agus an obair shonraichte a rinn e na bheatha.

The CEATS group have now completed a series of events with their partners.

In May of this year, Murdo Macleod led workshops and trips at Shawbost School and ‘on location’ round the village. On Monday, the workshop centred on the images printed from the glass negatives of Dr Norman Morrison. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, primaries 6 and 7 had an brilliant time travelling to locations – Beinn Bhragair, Fibhig, An Seann Bhaile and tobhtaichean Sgoil Os na Luch to name but a few. These sites were colourfully described By Dr Norman in his books. Angus and Roddy accompanied the group and filled in with stories, information and song.

Following community events included an evening of captioning the images, Glass plate workshops and a seminar day with speakers.

The Glass Plates workshop, by David Gillanders who was on the island with his family, demonstrated the technique which Dr Norman would have used to process and ‘develop’ the images – amazing to watch in this digital age.

A portfolio and framed photos from the glass images are now available to view at the Seann Sgoil and a Gaelic Youth project in October will complete Pròiseact Tormod an t-Seòladair. A Dvd will be produced to have another permanent record of Dr Norman Morrison’s legacy for the community.

Brag 2013

brag12013

Chaidh cothrom a thoirt do òigridh bho Nis gu Balantruiseal agus Barabhais gu Càrlabhagh tighinn còmhla gus tachartasan spòrsail fheuchainn tro na saor làithean – agus abair gun gabh iad an cothrom!.  Chur Iomairt Gàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais seachdain, ‘Brag’, air dòigh airson an ceithreamh bliadhna gus am faigheadh òigridh a thighinn còmhla gus beagan spòrs a dhèanamh, sgilean ùra ionnsachadh, diofar chur-seachadan fheuchainn agus cuideachd an cuid Ghàidhlig a cleachdadh agus a’ gleusadh ann an suidheachaidhean neo-fhoirmeil.

Ghabh iad pàirt anns na tachartasan a leanas: – bùth-obrach dealbhadh ‘s cruthachadh le Tiger Textiles far an d’fhuair buidheann Nis cothrom a dhol dhan tràigh air latha teth gus clachan a pheantadh agus bha buidheann an Taobh Siar ag obair sa stuidio air ‘wall blocks’ air an latha acasan.

Fhuair gach buidheann cothrom latha a chur seachad ag iasgachd air bàta ann an loch Erisort agus aig loch beag eile aig Murchadh Moireasdan ann an Keose.  Nar cuideachadh latha an iasgaich, bha Lewis MacChoinnich bhon gnìomhachas ‘Fish n trips’ agus Donnie is Tormod bhon Outer Hebrides Fisheries Trust.  Bha laithean brèagha ann leis a’ ghrian a’ dearsadh agus fhuair a h-uile duine cothrom air a’ bhàta a stùireadh agus rug a h-uile duine sa bhuidheann air rionnaich is saoithean agus chaidh crùbagan gu leòr fhaighinn sna clèibh a thog iad!  Aig an loch dh’ionnsaich iad mar a bhios tu a’ cur slat ri chèile agus fiùis mar a chuireas tu boiteag air dubhan!  Bha cuid nach robh ro dhèidheil air na boiteagan!

Goilf!  Dh’fheuch sinn tachartas ùr am bliadhna nuair a chaidh sinn chun a Bhac agus an ‘driving range’ ùr aca an sin.  Le taic is stùir bho Mairi NicIomhair, club Goilf Steòrnabhagh, chaith sinn ùine ag ionnsachadh mu dheidhinn an spòrs, mar bu choir dhut grèim a chumail air club agus a’ bualadh ball cho fad sa ‘s surrainn!

Chaidh an dà bhuidheann dhan chroit am bliadhna cuideachd!  Rinn a h-uile duine beagan obair air caora is cearcan – a’ glanadh taigh chearc; a’ cur peanta air uan agus an rud as fheàrr – eireagan beag fhaicinn agus a chumail; ‘s iad a bha snog!

Bha a h-uile pàirt den seachdain air an lìbhrigeadh tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig agus bha a’ chlann a’ bruidhinn Gàidhlig tron sheachdain ris a h-uile neach a thàinig ag obair leotha.  Chòrd an t-seachdain ris a’ chlann agus tha iad air leth taingeil dhan h-uile duine a chuidich le cuisean rè na seachdain.  Tha iad airson gum bidh barrachd cothroman mar seo ann anns an àm ri teachd.

‘S e cothrom air leth a bh’ann do òigridh le Gàidhlig a thighinn còmhla ann an ‘coimhearsnachd’ Gàidhlig agus an cànan a chleachdadh mar am prìomh dòigh chonaltradh.  Sheall e nach ann dìreach anns an sgoil a tha còrr aca a Ghàidhlig a bhruidhinn, ach gun ghabh e a chleachdadh anns gach suidheachadh.  Ionnsaich iad sgilean ùra, facail ùra agus tha iad nas tuigseal air an t-saoghail timcheal orra.

Chaidh an t-seachdain, “Brag” a chuir air dòigh le Iomairt Gàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais agus chaidh na cosgaisean am pàigheadh le Comunn na Gàidhlig, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, agus Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

An opportunity was given to young people between Ness – Balantruiseal and Barvas –Carloway to come together and take part in some fun activities during the school holidays – and they certainly grasped the opportunity!  Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath organised a week ‘Brag’ of activities, for the fourth year running, to enable young people to come together to have fun, learn new skills, try new activities and use and develop their Gaelic in relaxed, informal surroundings.

They took part in the following activities: – a design and make workshop with Tiger Textiles where the Ness group made the most of a hot day and took the workshop to the beach where we painted stones!  The Westside group spent the day in the studio creating very snazzy wall blocks on their day.

Each group also spent a day fishing on a boat out Loch Erisort and spent time at Murdo Morrisons loch in Keose.  Guiding us on the boat was Lewis Mackenzie from the business ‘fish n trips’ and from the Outer Hebrides Fisheries Trust were Donnie and Norman.  We had good weather both days with the sun shining, and everyone got an opportunity to steer the boat and everyone caught mackerel or saithe, plenty crabs were in the creels we lifted also!  At the loch they learned how to set up the rods and even how to bait them with worms.. Some were not very keen on the worms!

Golf!  A new activity for Brag this year, we went to Back to experience their new driving range. With help and guidance from Mairi Maciver, Stornoway Golf Club, we spent time learning about the game, how to hold a club and spent time trying to  hit the ball as far as we could!

Both groups spent a day on the croft this year too!  Everyone got their hands dirty working on the hens and sheep – cleaning the hen houses; putting mark on the lambs and the best part of all – holding newly born chicks!

Every part of the event was delivered through the medium of Gaelic and the young people conversed in Gaelic throughout the entire week.   The young people enjoyed the week and are grateful to everyone who came along to work with them.  They look forward to more opportunities like this in the future.

This was a fantastic opportunity for young people to come together and have their own Gaelic community.  It showed that Gaelic can be used in every situation and not only in school.  They learned new skills, new vocabulary and are more aware of the world around them.  They received certificates for taking part in the week also!

‘Brag’ was organised by the Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais and was funded by Comunn na Gàidhlig, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

A’ Chiad Bliadhna de Sradagan

slider5

Tha sinn air tighinn gu deireadh a’ chiad bliadhna de Sradagan an Taobh Siar agus abair gu bheil tòrr spòrs air a bhith againn!  Tron bhliadhna, bha cothrom aig an òigridh an cuid Gàidhlig a chleachdadh tro seisean airson spòrs agus fealla-dhà le caraidean.  Am measg nan tachartasan againn, bha sinn a’ cluich ball-coise, a’ dèanamh quiz, geamannan Olympaig le Jenny Nic an t-Sagairt agus rinn sinn dannsa ceum le Jayne à Nis, bha tòrr ealain againn cuideachd, gu h-àraidh aig Àm na Nollaige, Latha Naomh Valentine agus aig Àm na Càisge.

Airson deireadh a’ chiad bliadhna a chomharrachadh, chaidh sinn air turas a Nis.  Nuair a ràinig sinn air latha soilleir, blàth, chaidh sinn chun na pàirc-cluiche agus chòrd e ris a h-uile duine a bhith air na dreallagan.  Às dèidh seo chaidh sinn suas an rathad gu Spòrsnis airson beagan bòbhladh ‘s fhuair sinn cothrom geamaichean a chluich sa thalla.  Mus do dh’fhàg sinn Nis, fhuair sinn biadh air leth agus BBQ againn aig Comunn Eachdraidh Nis – abair gun deach ar lìonadh!

Chòrd an latha ris a h-uile duine agus bu mhath leinn taing a thoirt dhan a h-uile duine a thàinig agus dhan a h-uile duine a thug cuideachadh dhuinn!

An ath bhliadhn’, tha sinn an dòchas cumail ris an structar a th’ againn an-dràsta le geamannan agus ealain.  Taing mhòr dhan a h-uile pàrant a thàinig gach oidhche airson ar cuideachadh!

We have come to the end of our first year as Sradagan an Taobh Siar and what a fun year it’s been!  Throughout the year we have met to speak Gaelic and have fun and laughter with friends. Every week was different, we played football, had a quiz night and we even had an Olympic night with Jenny MacTaggart and enjoyed learning some dancing with Jayne from Ness along with arts and crafts evening with themed nights such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter.

To celebrate the end of our first year, we went for a trip to Ness!  First stop in Ness, on a lovely warm day was the playpark and everyone enjoyed their time on the swings, flying fox and climbing frames!  After the park, we went to Spòrsnis for some bowling and to play some games in the hall.  Before leaving Ness, we had a BBQ at Comunn Eachdraidh Nis with plenty tasty food!  Everyone enjoyed the day and we would like to thank those who helped out!

We hope to keep the same structure next year with games and arts & crafts amongst other activities.  Thank you to all the parents that volunteered to help run Sradagan on Monday nights!

Welcome leaflet

Following research on the level of usage of Gaelic in Shawbost, 2-3 years ago, an action plan was prepared by the community, in partnership with Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais and Bòrd na Gàidhlig and was launched a year ago in an attempt to strengthen Gaelic in the community.  Since then, many events have taken place to try and enhance to role of Gaelic in the community.

As part of the community action plan, an information booklet with lots of local information about Shawbost and the wider community has recently been produced, aimed primarily at visitors and tourists to the area.  The booklet contains general information about the community, contact numbers for businesses in the area as well as photographs and a map of the area.  And all this in a colourful, attractive, bilingual booklet.

The booklet was produced by a partnership consisting of Horshader Development Trust, Acair and Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais.

Horshader Development Trust was formed to stimulate development in the local community and was responsible for co-ordinating the information for this new booklet.

Acair is a Gaelic book publisher, based in Stornoway and they designed the booklet and supplied original pictures.

Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais was established to strengthen and develop Gaelic in the Ness to Carloway area.  The Iomairt translated the booklet and funded the project.

The booklets are now being dispersed all over the island but aimed particularly at local tourism outlets.
