Bòrd na Gàidhlig

Chaidh Bòrd na Gàidhlig a stèidheachadh mar bhuidhinn phoblaich fo Achd na Gàidhlig (Alba) 2005 a chuireadh an gnìomh air an 13mh An Gearran 2006.

Tha an reachdas air a dhealbhadh gus cleachdadh na Gàidhlig a thoirt an àrd, inbhe a’ chànain a dhèanamh tèarainte agus àm ri teachd don chànan a dhearbhadh san fhad-ùine. Tha an Achd a’ cur 3 amasan sònraichte ro Bhòrd na Gàidhlig:

  • àireamh luchd-labhairt is luchd-cleachdaidh na Gàidhlig a mheudachadh;
  • cleachdadh na Gàidhlig agus tuigse air a’ Ghàidhlig a bhrosnachadh; agus
  • a bhith cuideachadh le bhith a’ toirt cothrom do dhaoine air a’ Ghàidhlig ‘s a cultar air feadh Alba.

Bòrd na Gàidhlig was established as a public body by the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 which was commenced on 13th February 2006.

The legislation is designed to promote the use of Scottish Gaelic, secure the status of the language and ensure its long-term future. The Act sets out 3 main aims for Bòrd na Gàidhlig:

  • to increase the number of persons who are able to use and understand the Gaelic language;
  • to encourage the use and understanding of the Gaelic language; and
  • to facilitate access, in Scotland and elsewhere, to the Gaelic language and Gaelic culture.

Comunn na Gàidhlig

Chaidh Comunn na Gàidhlig a stèidheachadh ann an 1984 gus leasachadh na Gàidhlig a cho-òrdanachadh. Anns an latha ‘n-diugh tha a’ chompanaidh a’ lìbhrigeadh dà chùmhnant shònraichte le Iomairt na Gàidhealtachd agus Bòrd na Gàidhlig gus a’ Ghàidhlig a leasachadh air Ghàidhealtachd agus air feadh Alba.

Comunn na Gàidhlig was established in 1984 to co-ordinate the development of Gaelic.

Today it focuses on the delivery of two service contracts for aspects of Gaelic development for Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Bòrd na Gàidhlig. This is carried out through working with communities and businesses, and at a political level. CnaG has offices in Inverness, Stornoway and Glasgow, and additional staff based in Uist, Skye, Islay and Lochaber.

It is a social enterprise taking the legal form of a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. Day to day responsibility and execution of policy rests with the Chief Executive, who is also the Secretary of the Company. The Chief Executive is Donald MacNeil who is based in Inverness.

Iomairt na Gàidhealtachd ‘s nan Eilean

Iomairt Ghàidhlig Iar Thuath Leòdhais

Chaidh Iomairt Ghàidhlig IarThuath Leòdhais a stèidheachadh gus cothroman a chruthachadh airson a’ Ghàidhlig a chleachdadh agus a bhrosnachadh ann an Iar-Thuath Leòdhais. Tha dà phrìomh amas aig an iomairt:

  • Àireamh luchd-labhairt na Gàidhlig àrdachadh
  • Cothroman a chruthachadh airson a’ Ghàidhlig a chleachdadh

Iomairt Ghàidhlig IarThuath Leòdhais was established to increase opportunities to use and promote Gaelic in North West Lewis. The Initiative has 2 main priorities:

  • Increase the number of Gaelic speakers
  • Create opportunities to use Gaelic in the community

Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig

Chaidh Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig a stèidheachadh ann an 1999 le Riaghaltas na h-Alba airson foillseachadh agus sgaoileadh ghoireasan teagaisg do dh’fhoghlam Gàidhlig a cho-òrdanachadh. Tro phrògraman foillseachaidh Stòrlann tha goireasan gan deasachadh gach bliadhna do sgoiltean-àraich, bun-sgoiltean, àrd-sgoiltean agus foghlam fad-beatha.

Tha prìomhachasan gan taghadh le tidsearan agus luchd-ionnsachaidh agus tha stiùir agus taic a’ tighinn bho ùghdarrasan ionadail air feadh Alba tron bhuidheann tar-roinneil MRG agus bho bhuidhnean eile a’ riochdachadh luchd-ionnsachaidh.

Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig was established by the Scottish Executive in 1999 to co-ordinate the production and distribution of curriculum resources for Gaelic education.

Under Stòrlann’s publication programme, resources are distributed free of charge to nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools and lifelong learning groups every year. Priorities are set by teaching staff and learners and strategic planning and implementation is supported by local authorities through the MRG consortium, and by appropriate lifelong learning organisations.

Acair Earranta

Chaidh Acair Earranta a stèidheachadh ann an 1976, gus goireasan Gàidhlig a chruthachadh airson a’ phròiseact foghlam dà-chànanach a bha gus ùr-tòiseachadh anns na h-Eileanan Siar. Tha leabhraichean Acair a-nis ann an sgoiltean a tha a’ teagasg tro Mheadhan na Gàidhlig air feadh Alba.

Tha Acair air leabhraichean fhoillseachadh air iomadh cuspair, ann an Gàidhlig agus Beurla. Bidh iad cuideachd a’ foillseachadh leabhraichean dà-chànanach do dh’inbhich ach, ‘s e foillseachadh leabhraichean Gàidhlig a tha a’ faighinn prìomhachas.

Acair Ltd was established in 1976 to provide Gaelic language materials for the ground breaking bi-lingual education project in the Western Isles.

Its books are now in Gaelic Medium schools and classes across Scotland. Acair has published books on a wide range of subjects, in Gaelic and English. It also does bilingual publications for adults, but its core business is still the publication of Gaelic books. As well as producing books independently, Acair’s publication process is often assisted and encouraged by supporting agencies such as Bòrd na Gàidhlig and the Gaelic Books Council.

Comhairle na Eilean Siar

Tha a’ Chomhairle a’ lìbhrigeadh raon farsaing de sheirbheisean a tha àbhaisteach do dh’ùghdarras ionadail an Alba, gu sònraichte:

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is the local government council for Na h-Eileanan Siar council area of Scotland. The council was created in 1975.

The Comhairle delivers a full range of services typical of a Scottish local authority, in particular:

  • Education
  • Social Services
  • Roads and Transportation
  • Housing
  • Environmental Services
  • Leisure and Recreation
  • Corporate Services, including registration of births, deaths and marriages

Fèisean nan Gàidheal

Chaidh Fèisean nan Gàidheal a stèidheachadh ann an 1991 mar an comann iomlan neo-eisimeileach airson Iomairt nam Fèisean.

‘S e buidheann le ballrachd a th’ ann a tha a’ tairgse iomadh seirbheis, a’ gabhail a-steach taic le tabhartasan, trèanadh, àrachas agus iasadan ionnsramaidean. ‘S e companaidh earranta a tha ann am Fèisean nan Gàidheal.

Tha e air a mhaoineachadh le Alba Chruthachail, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comhairle na Gàidhealtachd agus Iomairt na Gàidhealtachd ‘s nan Eilean.

Fèisean nan Gàidheal was established in 1991 as the independent umbrella association of the Fèis movement. It is a membership organisation that offers a range of services to its members including grant-aid, training, insurance, and instrument loans.

Fèisean nan Gàidheal is a company limited by guarantee. It is funded by Creative Scotland, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, The Highland Council and Highlands & Islands Enterprise.

Comann nam Parant

Tha mu 30 buidheann Comann nam Pàrant (CnP) air feadh Alba, a’ riochdachadh phàrantan aig a bheil clann a tha a’ faighinn foghlam tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig aig diofar ìrean, bho chròileagan gu àrd-sgoil.

‘S e prìomh amas gach buidheann “a bhith a’ cur air adhart agus a’ toirt taice do stèidheachadh is cumail suas foghlam tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig”. ‘S ann air sàillibh strì phàrantan a thòisich foghlam tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig (FTMG) ann an 1985.

Feumaidh taic nam pàrant leantainn ma tha tuilleadh adhartais a’ dol a thighinn air an t-siostam foghlaim seo.

Comann nam Pàrant – consists of a network of around 30 local groups, representing the interests of parents whose children are educated through the medium of Gaelic at the various levels, from pre-school to secondary level.

The main aim of all CnP groups is “to promote and support the establishment and maintenance of education through the medium of Gaelic”.

It was as a result of the efforts of parents that Gaelic medium education (GME) first began in 1985. Continued parental support will be necessary to ensure further progress in this system of education.

Oilthigh na Gàidhealtachd agus nan Eilean

Gu h-iomlan tha 13 Com-pàirtichean Acadaimigeach ann, a’ gabhail a-steach sgìre fharsaing bho Cholaiste Shealtainn mu thuath gu Colaiste Earra-Ghàidheal mu dheas. Fhuair OGE inbhe Oilthigh sa Ghearran 2012.

The University of the Highlands and Islands – provides access to undergraduate and postgraduate study, and research opportunities through a distinctive partnership of 13 colleges and research institutions.

Each institution has its own character and contributes to the distinctive organisation that is the University of the Highlands and Islands. UHI gained full university status in February 2011, evolving from the higher education institution UHI Millennium Institute.

Mg Alba

Chaidh MG ALBA (ainm gnìomha Sheirbheis nam Meadhanan Gàidhlig) a stèidheachadh fo Achd Chonaltraidh 2003 gus dèanamh cinnteach gu bheil deagh phrògraman Gàidhlig rim faotainn airson dhaoine ann an Alba. Ann an co-bhanntachd leis a’ BhBC, tha MG ALBA air BBC ALBA, an t-seirbheis dhidseatach Ghàidhlig, a stèidheachadh.

Tha e mar phrìomhachas aig MG ALBA cothrom-sgaoilidh BBC ALBA a ghlèidheadh air a h-uile ùrlar didseatach, agus craoladh sa Ghàidhlig a dhèanamh seasmhach san àm ri teachd.

Tha MG ALBA cuideachd ag obair còmhla ri riochdairean airson leasachadh, trèanadh agus cleachdadh Gàidhlig mar chànain-obrach a’ ghnìomhachais-riochdachaidh a bhrosnachadh.

MG ALBA (the operating name of Seirbheis nam Meadhanan Gàidhlig or Gaelic Media Service) was established under the Communications Act 2003 to ensure that high quality television programmes in Gaelic are made available to persons in Scotland.

In partnership with the BBC, MG ALBA has established BBC ALBA, the Gaelic digital service. MG ALBA is committed to securing the distribution of BBC ALBA on all digital platforms and a sustainable future for Gaelic broadcasting. MG ALBA also works with producers to promote development, training and the use of Gaelic as the working language of the Gaelic production sector.

NHS Eileannan Siar

Western Isles NHS Board – works closely with a range of other statutory bodies (e.g. CnES, NHS 24, Scottish Ambulance Service) and voluntary sector services to seek to ensure the best possible health and care service to the Western Isles population.

Proiseact nan Ealan

Pròiseact nan Ealan – buidheann leasachaidh nàiseanta nan ealan Gàidhlig an Alba. Stèidhichte ann an 1987, ‘s e companaidh earranta neo-phrothaid agus buidheann carthannais clàraichte a tha ann. Aig an àm seo tha PNE a’ fastadh 5 luchd-obrach làn-ùine, a tha a’ faighinn taic airson phròiseactan sònraichte bho luchd-obrach neo-cheangailte agus saor-thoileach ma bhios feum aca air.

‘S e amas PNE gur e am buidheann ro-innleachdach airson leasachadh nan ealan Gàidhlig agus gum bi e dìoghrasach mu bhith ag adhartachadh cho cudromach ‘s a tha cànan agus cultar na Gàidhlig ann an Alba ùr, beothail agus misneachail. Gaelic Arts Agency is the national development agency for the Scottish Gaelic arts.

Established in 1987, PNE is a non-profit limited company and a registered charity. PNE currently employs 5 full-time members of staff, who receive support for specific projects from freelance staff and volunteers as and when required.

PNE’s aim is to be the strategic agency for Gaelic arts development and to be passionate about promoting the importance of Gaelic language and culture within a modern, vibrant and confident Scotland.

Sgoil Shiabost

Tha Sgoil Shiaboist air Taobh Siar Eilean Leòdhais, mu fhichead mìle à Steornabhagh. ‘S e sgoil choimhearsnachd dà-chànanach a th’ innte, ann an togalach ùr a dh’fhosgail ann an 1992. ‘S e sgoilearan eadar 5-14 bliadhna a dh’aois a tha a’ frithealadh na sgoile agus tha 86 sgoilearan anns an sgoil an-dràsta.

Tha seachd tidsearan làn-ùine ag obair san sgoil agus tòrr eile a bhios a’ tadhal innte. Tha ionad Gàidhlig sa bhun-sgoil agus cothrom diofar chuspairean a dhèanamh tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig san àrd-sgoil. Bidh sgoilearan à Sgoil An Taobh Siar agus à Càrlabhagh a’ dol gu Sgoil Shiaboist às dèidh clas 7.

Sgoil Shiaboist is situated on the West Side of Lewis and is around twenty miles from Stornoway. It is a bilingual community school, the present modern building having been opened in 1992.

The school caters for pupils between 5 and 14 years of age and currently has a roll of 86 pupils. There are seven permanent teachers and a large number of visiting staff. The primary department has a Gaelic Medium unit and pupils can also opt for Gaelic Medium teaching in selected subjects in the secondary.

As well as its own primary department, the school has associated primary schools, Sgoil An Taobh Siar and Carloway, which transfer pupils to the secondary department after P7.

Horshader Community Development

Urras Leasachaidh Coimhearsnachd Horsiadar – urras carthannais leis a’ bhaile a chaidh a chur air dòigh anns a’ Chèitean 2005 gus tuathan gaoithe a phlanadh, a thogail agus a ruith airson muinntir Shiaboist bho Dheas, Dhail Mòr agus Dhail Beag air Taobh Siar Eilean Leòdhais.

Horshader Community Development – a real live village-owned charitable trust originally set up in May 2005 to plan, build and run a dinky community windfarm for the good people of South Shawbost, Dalmore and Dalbeg on the west coast of the beautiful Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides.
